5th Workshop on East Asian Medicine in English (Spring version)

5回目となりました英語でのワークショップのご報告。今回のテーマは春。

ここから英語で書きますのであしからず。

1st Workshop (in Japanese)

2nd Workshop (in Japanese)

3rd Workshop ~Autumn version~ (in English)

4th Workshop ~Winter version~ (in English)

First of all, I talked about Yin & Yang and how the energy force shifts in nature. The traditional East Asian medicines teach us how to cope with this shift. It tells us that synchronizing our body & mind with the nature is the key to healthy living.

At the date of workshop (2/27), we have entered spring season. The direction of energy shifted from downward to upward. According to the five element theory, spring belongs to “Wood element”. Just as a sprout grows upward to turn into a plant, the wood element desires to keep moving. When this desire gets suppressed, problem arises. This stagnation of the wood element commonly leads to Liver(Gallbladder) Qi stagnation, since Liver & Gallbladder belongs to the wood element according to the five element theory.

Common symptoms of Liver(Gallbladder) Qi stagnation are;

– Tension headache, temple headache

– PMS/PMT, irregular period, fertility issues

– Eye problems

– Poor circulation

– Anxiety, depression, insomnia

– Fatigue

– Muscular Spasms, neck/shoulder tension (especially on right side), chest tightness

– Frustration, irritability

I coverd how to deal with these symptoms as the result of Liver Qi stagnation. The selfcare methods include moxibustion, acupressure, diets, and qi gong exercises.

I also introduced some of intersting local vegatables in season.

Udo, nanohana.

Cookpad has some recipes in English. Try searching mysterious vegetables.

Many of these vegetables have power to cleanse stagnation in Liver & Gallbladder channels.

But, you always have to remember the basic rule; balance is important & too much of anything would harm your health.

The three places I mentioned during the workshop;

Zen meditation

Yoga

Tai chi (in Japanese)

Have a wonderful Spring!
